National Fruits & Veggies Month!

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014

In honor of National Fruits & Veggies Month, here are some good ones to give your canine companion:

Good Fruits:

  • Apples
  • Berries
  • Cranberries
  • Bananas
  • Mangos
  • Papaya

Good Veggies:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Squash
  • Kale
  • Green Beans
  • Zucchini

Foods NOT good for dogs:

  • Onions
  • Raisins
  • Grapes
  • Macadamia Nuts

Fresh foods are good to feed your dog because they have live enzymes and lots of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals.  Many of the nutrients in kibble are depleted because they have been so processed, so vitamins and minerals are added back into the food.

Dogs have a short digestive system, so they will get more benefits from and absorb these fresh foods better if they are cooked or processed (in a food processor or blender) first.

You can add these fresh foods to your dogs kibble, or try blending together as many of these ingredients as you’d like and put in an ice cube tray to make frozen doggie popsicles, or place in a kong for freezing.  Experiment with these different ingredients because not all dogs enjoy all of these foods.

This is something you can have fun with, and is a great way to use foods in your fridge that you might not eat before they go bad!
